Exciting results for customers of new bus fuel saving system
16 October 2008
The first fuel saving system designed specifically for buses, in active use by around 600 drivers, indicates that bus operators could save 30% on their fuel bills. With diesel costs continuing to rise, operators are saving an average of more than £2,000 per vehicle. At the same time as reducing fuel consumption, ECOManager also reduces carbon emissions - lowering a fleet's carbon footprint by over 5,000kg per bus every year.
The ECOManager system includes a real time driver's LED display which changes from green to amber to red according to their driving, providing instant efficiency feedback. The ‘Black Box' records each journey and provides fully automated reporting by driver, bus or route. The system integrates with the vehicle's CAN system, therefore uses actual data rather than estimates based on parameters and assumptions.
By altering driver behaviour, ECOManager also reduces accidents and makes for a more pleasant passenger experience. Operators have found that the savings extend beyond just fuel, with maintenance costs also reduced through improved wear and tear, including tyres. Insurance costs are also reduced, due to a reduction in accidents and claims attributed in the past to harsh braking.
21st Century has developed a four-tier training programme to work alongside the software to maximise the benefits and maintain the savings. Drivers who require additional training can be identified through the comprehensive reporting system.
Drivers in the trial have welcomed the feedback, and some have reported improved fuel consumption in their own vehicles as a result.
According to the company, the system pays for itself within a very short time-frame, as Paul Rogers explains: "Most fuel saving devices operate independently of CAN but ECOManager uses CAN data to achieve at least a 5% improvement in fuel economy, and the results so far have shown that even better fuel economy is easily achievable. When you add in additional savings on maintenance and insurance, plus the improved passenger experience and benefits to the environment, it is clear to see why many operators have contacted us. Those already using ECOManager will continue to reap benefits throughout the life of the vehicle."
