CCTV experts launch system for Emergency Vehicles
05 March 2008

- 30% reduction in attacks -

21st Century, the UK's leading provider of rugged transport-based CCTV systems, has launched a new system designed specifically for Emergency Service vehicles. Fire Brigades that have installed similar systems have reported a 30% reduction in attacks as a result*.

CCTV provides a deterrent as well as offering crucial evidence in attack situations and road traffic accidents. Data and images gathered at an emergency incident can be used for training purposes and the system also offers high levels of protection against theft from the vehicle.

The 21st Century system offers 30 days of digital recordings from up to 16 cameras on each vehicle. The cameras are all high resolution, waterproof and vandal-proof and night vision capabilities are also available. A new addition to the product range includes a rear mounted camera for safer reversing and blind spot protection.

The CCTV system can also be linked to a ‘black box' recorder to integrate with accelerator, brakes and indicators for evidence in the event of an accident or insurance claim.

Attacks on emergency services personnel were highlighted earlier this month in a report from the Fire Brigades Union. In its report ‘Easy targets?'* the union claims that assaults rose from 1,300 in 2006 to 1,500 in 2007. The FBU says such attacks had become a "recreational activity" with crews facing 40 attacks a week, including being ambushed, shot at, stabbed and abused.
